Uptime Kuma is an open source, self-hosted monitoring tool that tracks the availability of your services and alerts you when something goes down. After a few weeks of running it via Docker Compose to monitor both my homelab services and sites running on external hosting, my overall impression is quite positive—but there are some structural concerns that may send me looking for alternatives down the road.

Setup and First Impressions

Getting Uptime Kuma running is straightforward. A single service in a Docker Compose file, a volume for persistence, and you’re at the web interface within minutes. There’s no separate database server to configure, no complex dependency chain—it uses an embedded SQLite database and handles everything through the browser.

The interface itself is visually clean and immediately readable. Service status is communicated with bright reds and greens that make the current state of your infrastructure obvious at a glance. There’s no ambiguity, no hunting through log tables—you see what’s up and what’s down the moment the page loads. For a monitoring dashboard you might glance at dozens of times a day, that clarity matters.

Monitoring Capabilities

Uptime Kuma supports a surprisingly broad range of monitor types for a project of its size. I’m currently using HTTP/HTTPS checks for web services, ping and TCP monitors for lower-level connectivity, and DNS checks for name resolution. The setup for each is intuitive—pick a type, enter a target, set an interval, and it starts collecting data immediately.

This is worth distinguishing from tools like Prometheus and Grafana, which I also run. Prometheus is fundamentally a metrics collection system—it scrapes detailed internal data from instrumented endpoints and excels at performance analysis, capacity planning, and alerting on complex conditions. Uptime availability is a side benefit, not its purpose. Uptime Kuma fills a different niche: external black-box monitoring of whether services are reachable and responding. Not everything has or needs a Prometheus endpoint, especially services hosted by other people or companies where you don’t control the software stack. For checking whether your external hosting provider is actually serving your sites, Uptime Kuma is the right tool.

The distinction between the admin dashboard and the public status page is a nice touch. The admin interface gives you full detail—response times, uptime percentages, monitor configuration—while the status page provides a clean, public-facing summary of service health without exposing any of that. It’s the kind of separation that matters in a professional or team context, where you want customers or stakeholders to see whether services are up without giving them access to your monitoring internals. For a homelab it’s not immediately useful, but it’s good to know the capability is there if the need arises.

Uptime Kuma’s notification support is genuinely impressive in its breadth. I tried email first and it worked smoothly—straightforward to configure and reliable in delivery. But the sheer number of supported options is what stands out. Signal and Telegram are available as secure messaging options that typically go straight to a cell phone, making them practical for urgent alerts. For more structured incident response, there are integrations with microservice-oriented tools that support call trees and escalation workflows, as well as PagerDuty, which is probably the best-known enterprise on-call platform. The range of choices means you can realistically match your notification strategy to whatever communication tools you already use.

Monitors can also be grouped together and tagged, and notifications can be configured at the group level rather than on each individual monitor. This is powerful in principle—you can organize by host, by service tier, or by environment and attach the appropriate notification channels to each group instead of duplicating settings across dozens of monitors.

In practice, though, the grouping is non-intuitive. Groups are visible in the UI and useful for visual organization, but they don’t inherit properties. If I want to be polite and check externally hosted sites less frequently than services on my own local network, I have to set the interval manually on each monitor when I create it—or fall back to the API or a direct SQLite query. There are some bulk operations available, but they’re limited to trivial changes. It’s a situation where the feature exists but doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of what grouping should mean. On the positive side, the presence of even basic bulk operations hints that this has been noticed and is being worked on, so more capable group-level management may arrive in a future release.

Beyond what I’m actively using, the project supports monitors for game servers, MQTT brokers, Docker containers, and more. It’s clearly designed by someone who runs their own infrastructure and kept adding support for whatever they needed next.

The Hobby Project Charm

Uptime Kuma has the feel of a labor of love—a project built by someone solving their own problems and sharing the result. The feature set is ambitious, the UI is polished beyond what you’d expect from a solo maintainer, and the project has attracted a healthy community. That energy is part of what makes it appealing.

But hobby project charm comes with hobby project tradeoffs, and a few of those tradeoffs are significant.

The Backup Problem

The backup and restore feature has a prominent notice on the page acknowledging that it doesn’t work. The feature is present in the UI but explicitly marked as broken.

I sympathize with the maintenance burden of open source software. Features break, dependencies shift, and a solo maintainer can’t fix everything. But leaving a broken feature visible in the UI with a disclaimer is an odd choice. Disabling or removing it until it’s fixed would be more professional. As it stands, a new user discovers the backup feature, thinks “great, I should set up backups,” and then learns it’s non-functional—after they’ve already committed to the tool.

The Configuration-as-Database Problem

This is the more fundamental concern. All of Uptime Kuma’s configuration—monitors, notification channels, status pages, users—lives in the SQLite database. There’s no configuration file, no way to declare your monitoring configuration as code.

To be fair, Uptime Kuma does provide an API that can be used to automate the creation of monitors, which goes a long way toward addressing this limitation. You could script your monitor setup and run it against a fresh instance, which is a meaningful improvement over clicking through the UI every time. The Kuma UI supports API keys for authentication, though not all of the third-party client libraries do—so depending on which client you use, you may end up passing credentials directly. But an API-driven workflow is still not the same as a declarative configuration file that you can check into version control and apply idempotently. It’s a workaround rather than a solution.

For a homelab tool, this means:

  • No automated deployment. You can’t define your monitors in a YAML file and deploy a fully configured instance. The API helps, but you’re still maintaining a script rather than a config file.
  • No version-controlled configuration. Your monitoring definitions don’t live in a Git repository alongside the rest of your infrastructure configuration. They live in a SQLite file that you either remember to copy or lose.
  • History is tied to the database. Redeploying means losing your uptime history unless you carefully preserve and migrate the database volume. For a monitoring tool, historical data is arguably the most valuable thing it produces.

Any one of these would be a manageable limitation. Together, they form an uncomfortable triangle: manual setup, no working backup, and history loss on redeployment. If you deploy once and leave it running indefinitely, this may never matter. But if your homelab involves frequent rebuilds, infrastructure migration, or any kind of automated provisioning, it’s a real friction point.

The Verdict (For Now)

Uptime Kuma is excellent at its core job. It monitors services reliably, presents status clearly, and offers a surprisingly deep feature set for a self-hosted tool. If you need a monitoring dashboard and you’re willing to treat it as a long-lived stateful service, it delivers a lot of value for zero cost.

But the inability to manage configuration as code, combined with a broken backup feature, means I’ll be keeping an eye on alternatives. The moment I need to redeploy frequently or manage monitoring across multiple environments, Uptime Kuma’s database-only architecture becomes a liability rather than a simplification. For now, it earns its place in the stack—with the understanding that “for now” might have an expiration date.
